Homeward Path 54: Help! Help! We’re Being Oppressed!

Monty Python references aside, we’ve just had a banning a week into a brand new format. We’ve got a card/deck/color that’s oppressing the Standard format as a whole. There have been numerous examples of formats warped by broken cards. Today, I want to talk about the struggle of building decks in such formats. It presents unique challenges, and while I present something resembling a Rock-Paper-Scissors model, remember that if it was that easy, we wouldn’t be in this situation. These are just tools to use in order to position yourselves to have a puncher’s chance, so to speak.

Homeward Path 52: Choosing What Beats You

This week, I’m taking a look at one of the most-maligned approaches to Magic deckbuilding and gameplay: linear decks. Their philosophy is simple: Push up against the edges of the rules, breaking as many as you can, for fun and profit! These types of decks tend to remain competitively viable and extremely friendly for budget players at the same time, so come on in and enjoy the ride!
